Pete the python lives in the bush in my backyard. He measures an impressive 3.5 meters long and I reckon he weighs around 50 kilos.

I first found Pete after my morning run when I was about to take my customary cool off dip in our swimming pool. As I strolled towards the water I noticed Pete’s massive body out of the corner of my eye, quietly soaking up the sun.

Naturally the sight of Pete stopped me in my tracks and stories of pythons eating kangaroos and even the odd human came flooding into my mind.

I needn’t have worried though. As it turns out, Pete’s quite a placid bloke and appears to prefer rats and lizards … but understandably he doesn’t say no to the odd cat, small dog or chicken if they are silly enough to wander by.

Apart from Pete’s impressive size, two other things were immediately noticeable when we crossed paths that first morning.

Firstly he had a huge bulge in the middle of his body. Secondly – and much to my consternation - he showed no inclination to slither away into the bush.

The bulge told me that Pete had just eaten – something rather large.

And apparently when a python has a big meal it uses all its energy to digest it and finds it difficult to shift its massive bulk until the meal is finished. At which point it’s suddenly starving and goes off in search of its next victim.

And that’s why Pete the Python is the perfect metaphor for the challenge that you face in making more money: like Pete, your time is divided between either being “full” to capacity with client work or being “hungry” and desperately on the search for more clients.

Frankly, neither state is ideal and there is a (much) better way.

Whilst it’s true that more client work brings in more money (but probably still not enough to achieve your personal lifestyle goals) it also brings a lot of anxiety due to constantly looming deadlines.

And a full book of clients also means you become “time poor” - which impacts negatively on your relationships with loved ones and even your health – with peace of mind being replaced by stress and personal habits such as exercise and proper eating often falling by the wayside.

Still, with a full book of clients, you have enough money coming in at least ... until a few clients cancel and then suddenly you’ve swapped the stress of too much client work for the stress of not enough money – and you’re like Peter the Python hungrily looking for his next meal.
